About the album

“How long is now?” puts a spotlight on the Finnish pianist, composer and life-force Iiro Rantala, and on what is evidently a happy and resoundingly creative phase in his life. Rantala has described clearly what he wants to do as a composer: to write “simple melodies that people can remember,” and there are several fine examples with catchy hooks on this album. For example, he has set out to capture the contrasting personalities of each of his two young sons Bruno and Topi. There is also joy in lively, buoyant tunes such as “A Nut” and “Snapchat”. And a feature present throughout the album - and which was apparently much in evidence at the sessions too - is Iiro Rantala’s winning sense of humour.
Seven of the thirteen compositions here are by Rantala himself, three tracks by the other players in the trio, and three more by others who, in their different ways, have helped to construct Rantala’s appealing musical personality: Jimi Hendrix, Kenny Barron and Johann Sebastian Bach. Hendrix’s “Little Wing” is a reminder that Rantala has very strong roots which are well outside the jazz tradition. Rantala’s take on Kenny Barron’s “Voyage”: “It’s a mixture of Finnish Tango and...well… ‘Voyage’,” says Rantala. The “Kyrie” from the “Mass in B minor” is the memory of a formative moment: “I started my life in music singing Bach at age of seven in a boys choir.”
Rantala’s also wants to take a jazz trio in a specific direction: “The main idea,” he says, “is to avoid the basic concept of the jazz piano trio, and to make it more groovy, with simple melodies.” Rantala was also thrilled to have the opportunity in June 2015 to do just two concerts and this recording with the drummer Peter Erskine: “I love Peter Erskine’s playing,” he enthuses. “I grew up listening to him. Steps Ahead, Weather Report and particularly Word of Mouth.” The bassist of the trio is another consummate musician, Lars Danielsson, whose playing is consistently both subtle and authoritative, and who has contributed two tunes, a brief evocation of a Nordic winter morning, and a piece celebrating the confluence of East and West in music in Istanbul.
In “How long is now?”, Rantala, Erskine and Danielsson have produced a thoroughly life-affirming album.

Born in 1958, he is a musician with particularly broad interests. At the conservatory in Gothenburg he had studied classical cello, before changing to bass and to jazz. As a bassist he has a uniquely rounded sound, which is as lyrical as powerful. As a bassist he has a uniquely rounded sound, which is as lyrical as powerful.

The "Lars Danielsson Quartet" with former Miles Davis saxophonist David Liebman, pianist Bobo Stenson and legendary ECM drummer Jon Christensen has received a lot of recognition and numerous awards during the 18 years of its existence. Danielsson has released ten solo-albums since 1980 with his quartet and guests such as Alex Acuña and John Abercrombie. The Quartet has been a testing ground for Danielsson’s work as a composer and arranger, which has extended over the last years to include both - symphony orchestra and big band music. He has worked with Denmark’s Radio Concert Orchestra as well as the JazzBaltica Ensemble as a composer, arranger and producer.

Lars Danielsson has worked with: Randy and Michael Brecker, John Scofield, Jack DeJohnette, Mike Stern, Billy Hart, Charles Lloyd, Terri Lyne Carrington and Dave Kikoski. He has also been a member of the "Trilok Gurtu Group".

As a producer, Lars Danielsson worked with Cæcilie Norby, Jonas Johansen, the Danish Radio Concert Orchestra and Viktoria Tolstoy.

In 2007, he received a commission for a piece with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestrafeaturing himself as a soloist together with Leszek Moždžer. He has also received a commission from the NDR Big Band and Wolfgang Haffner to write a piece for the JazzBaltica Festival 2007. Furthermore, he has been working with the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with Vytas Sondeckis and Bugge Wesseltoft.

His 2008 album “Pasodoble” was a huge success. Jazzwise UK wrote about Danielsson’s collaboration with Polish pianist Leszek Moždžer: “A clarity of thought and execution rarely encountered in jazz.”

“Pasodoble” was followed by another collaboration with Leszek Moždžer on the 2009 album “Tarantella”. Once more the album caused enthusiastic reactions by Jazzwise: “Easily Danielsson’s finest album to date, it also numbers among the finest albums in the ACT catalogue.”

On his most recent album “Liberetto”, Lars Daniellson teams up with Armenian piano shooting Star “Tigran”, e.s.t. drummer Magnus Öström guitarist John Paricelli and Trumpeter Arve Henriksen to discovers new musical spaces and the freedom of music between chamber jazz, classic and European folk music.

Peter Erskine has played the drums since the age of four and is known for his versatility and love of working in different musical contexts. He appears on 700 albums and film scores, and has won two Grammy Awards, plus an Honorary Doctorate from the Berklee School of Music (1992). He has played with the Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson Big Bands, Weather Report, Steps Ahead, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, Kenny Wheeler, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Brecker Brothers, The Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny and Gary Burton, John Scofield, et al, and has appeared as a soloist with the London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Frankfurt Radio, Scottish Chamber, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Royal Opera House, BBC Symphony, Oslo and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras. Peter premièred the double percussion concerto Fractured Lines, composed by Mark-Anthony Turnage, at the BBC Proms with Andrew Davis conducting, and has collaborated frequently with Sir Simon Rattle. He also premiered the Turnage opera "Anna Nicole" at the Royal Opera House in London. Turnage has composed a solo concerto for Peter titled "Erskine," which received its world premiere in Bonn, Germany in 2013, with a US premiere at the Hollywood Bowl with the LA Philharmonic. Peter has been voted 'Best Jazz Drummer of the Year' ten times by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine and was elected into the magazine's Hall of Fame in 2017. The Percussive Arts Society will be inducting Peter into its Hall of Fame at the November 2022 PASIC conference ins Indianapolis.
Peter graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and studied at Indiana University under George Gaber. In 1972 Peter commenced his pro career playing with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Four years later, he joined Maynard Ferguson before working with Jaco Pastorius in Weather Report and moving to Los Angeles. Peter recorded five albums with the band. He won his first Grammy Award with their album '8.30'. During this time in LA, he also worked with Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Farrell and George Cables. Peter then moved to New York City where he worked for five years with such musicians as Michael Brecker, Mike Mainieri, Eddie Gomez and Eliane Elias in Steps Ahead, John Scofield, Bill Frisell and Marc Johnson in the legendary group Bass Desires, the John Abercrombie Trio plus Bob Mintzer's Big Band.
Peter has lived in LA since 1987 but has been traveling around the world all of that time, working with such artists as Diana Krall, Joni Mitchell, Vince Mendoza, Steely Dan, plus European musicians Jan Garbarek, Kenny Wheeler, Palle Danielsson, John Taylor, Kate Bush, Nguyen Lê, Rita Marcotulli, the Norrbotten Big Band in Sweden plus Sadao Watanabe in Japan. He won his second Grammy Award as the drummer of the WDR big band in Köln along with Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Vince Mendoza and others for the "Some Skunk Funk" album. Meanwhile, Peter keeps busy in on the road and in LA with such artists as Seth MacFarlane, Patrick Williams, plus John Beasley, Bob Sheppard and Benjamin Shepherd (all 3 musicians members of his Dr. Um Band), as well as playing in the studios. Films where Peter's drumming can be heard include "Memoirs of a Geisha," all three of the Austin Powers movies, "The Secret Life of Pets," plus the title music of the Steven Spielberg/John Williams collaboration, "The Adventures of Tintin." He also played on the Academy Award-winning soundtrack for "La La Land," and can be heard drumming on "The Orville," "Let Them All Talk," "Mank" and "Babylon." Peter produces jazz recordings for his record label, Fuzzy Music, with 4 Grammy nominations to its credit. Peter is also the author of several books including "No Beethoven (Autobiography & Chronicle of Weather Report)," "Time Awareness for All Musicians" and his latest book (co-authored with Dave Black for Alfred Publishing), "The Musician's Lifeline." "The Drum Perspective" will enjoy a re-release including added content in late 2022. Peter has also authored a series of iOS Play-Along apps suitable for all instruments.
Peter is Professor of Practice and Director of Drumset Studies at the Thornton School of Music, University of Southern California. Peter plays Tama Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Vic Firth Sticks, Remo Drum Heads, Meinl Percussion, and uses Shure Microphones and Zoom digital recording devices.
